The Avon Gorgeous Saturday 1 August 2026 Departing from Crewe, Shrewsbury, Hereford 'On 1st August 1966, two days after England won the World Cup, D1948 entered traffic. Sixty years later Locomotive Services are celebrating its anniversary, to the day, offering a day excursion to the City of Bristol. The train will be operated by what is now 47712 along with another Class 47, in Top & Tail formation, from Crewe to Bristol T.M. The train will leave Crewe around 08.30 picking up at Shrewsbury (09.00) and Hereford (10.10). From Hereford the train will run via Ledbury, Worcester Shrub Hill and Evesham to Oxford. This route is little used by locomotive hauled trains these days and provides the opportunity to do so. From Oxford we will travel via Foxhall Jn (Didcot), Swindon and Bristol Parkway to Bristol T.M. ( 13.45) where customers can alight if they wish to. For those wishing to do something a little different the train will then depart Bristol T.M. and head towards Portbury Docks. Leaving the main line at Parson Street Jn we will traverse the Portishead branch as far as the Stop Board for Portbury Docks. On arrival there you will be able to view where the branch to Portishead used to run and which will hopefully reopen in 2028, having closed in 1964. After our reversal we will then head back to Bristol T.M., but not via the direct route as we will traverse the line via St Philips Marsh. On arrival into Bristol there will an opportunity for a 2/3-hour break away from the train. Once back on the train we will return to Crewe from Bristol T.M. (17.45), this time via the alternative route of Bath Spa, Swindon, Kemble and Cheltenham Spa to Worcester Shrub Hill. From here we will retrace our steps, setting down at Hereford (21.00) and Shrewsbury (22.00) before arriving back in Crewe (22.30). UPDATE 11/07/2026: 125 Group is sorry to advise that the proposed start of our Paignton trip at Bury has been refused by Network Rail . Apparently, there is no ongoing approval to use the connection from the East Lancs. Railway in passenger service, despite having operated as recently as the end of May, and fresh approval will require 14 weeks to process. We are very disappointed with this situation, having previously been assured that the approval was in place. We are reviewing our options to start as close as possible to the advertised departure point and it seems likely that Rochdale will become the start and finish point, with all other previous pick ups retained. For those in the far south west, we are looking to see whether we can offer an Exeter to Paignton return - subject to availability of space. We will add this to the booking site shortly, although may have to limit numbers sold until we are more certain of booking levels to Bristol and Exeter. We will update this post as soon as we have confirmation on these changes and apologise again for any inconvenience caused. 125 Group

By Routemaster to the Lost Village of Imber Saturday 15th August 2026 Our last visit to Imber for the Imberbus event was way back in 2024, and since then we've been itching to return. With the support of our friends at GB Railfreight and Hastings Diesels Ltd, we are delighted to announce that it's finally happening! Hidden from view on Salisbury Plain, the village of Imber is no longer inhabited as the residents were evicted just before Christmas 1943 by the MoD, in order to step up army training in advance of D-Day. The villagers were promised that their village would be returned to them after the war but this was not to be and over seventy-five years on it is still uninhabited, much of it having been destroyed. It remains in use for army training purposes but the connecting road over the Plain is open to the public on a very limited number of occasions each year. Imberbus is an unusual event by any standards. Since 2009, on just one day a year, an intensive service of London Routemaster Buses has operated between Warminster and Imber, continuing to remote spots such as New Zealand Farm and the curiously-named Brazen Bottom. The annual event has raised many thousands of pounds for the British Legion and for the upkeep of Imber Church, one of the very few buildings to survive intact. The event has grown and the 2024 running hosted up to 40 buses in operation, wit thousands of visitors carried and more tens of thousands raised for charity. As we did in 2024, we will be using the Hastings DEMU 1001. This means we will have a buffet car onboard as well as providing excellent capacity to what is sure to be a popular railtour. Our special train will run from Tonbridge, pausing to pickup passengers at South Croydon and London Waterloo before heading west calling at Woking and Basingstoke en-route to Warminster via Salisbury. On the way home we take a slightly longer route, travelling via Romsey, Southampton and Winchester before our first set down at Basingstoke. An Imberbus rover ticket is included in your fare so you can travel to each of the Imberbus destinations aboard your choice of Routemasters - old and new, long and short, red and green! The Slate Miner Saturday 15 August 2026 Our journey commences at Oxford where we will head northwards towards Banbury along the GWR main line to Birmingham. After picking up passengers at Banbury, we continue through Oxfordshire and enter Warwickshire at Fenny Compton and pass through the Spa town of Leamington. Calling at Warwick Parkway, with its good road connections serving the surrounding area, we will then tackle the steep climb of Hatton Bank before arriving at Dorridge in the West Midlands for a further pick up. We then make our way through the southern Birmingham suburbs to Birmingham New Street, where our locomotive hauled train will make an unfamiliar appearance amongst the usual electric and diesel units. Leaving Birmingham, we head through the industrial Black Country towards Bescot. Here we will pause to change locomotives, and a Colas Rail Class 56 locomotive will take over for the run to Blaenau Festiniog, offering a rare opportunity for haulage by a freight locomotive. Travelling via Wolverhampton, we again make a pick-up stop. A quick dash now follows through Penkridge to Stafford, our final pick-up point. It is now northwards we head, away from Stafford and follow the West Coast Main Line with an expected lively climb up to Whitmore Summit before descending into Crewe, a delight for those who enjoy spotting the various locomotives and traction that appear in Basford Hall freight yards. From Crewe, we leave the WCML and head across the fertile Cheshire Plain through Beeston Castle towards Chester. Negotiating the tracks that pass beneath the famous city walls of Roman Chester, we cross the border and enter North Wales, running along the coastal route through Shotton, where we will soon have some pleasant views across the Dee Estuary as we follow it as far as Prestatyn. With the Welsh hills prominent inland, the coastal vista now turns to wide sweeping views over Liverpool Bay as we follow the line through to Rhyl. Further attractive scenery continues as the railway hugs the coastal cliffs through Colwyn Bay on the approach to Llandudno Junction. Here we reverse our direction of travel to access the 28-mile-long Blaenau Ffestiniog branch, known as the Conwy Valley Line. Leaving Llandudno Junction, we follow closely the banks of the Afon Conwy through Llanwrst as far as the major tourist town of Betws-y-Coed, complete with its railway museum next to the tracks. Beyond Betws-y-Coed, the single line enters the Lledr Valley where the gradients increase substantially, requiring some very hard work from our locomotives for several miles through its many twists and turns. We cross the Lledr on the spectacular 24-arch Pont Gethin Viaduct, followed by narrow tunnels and a glimpse of Dolwyddelan castle as we climb through Roman Bridge to the summit at the Blaenau tunnel. The 2.5-mile-long tunnel is the longest unlined tunnel in the UK, which took 6 years to complete. Exiting the tunnel on the Blaenau side, the landscape changes dramatically from lush Snowdonia scenery to a total domination of slate quarry waste, which leads us to our destination of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Time will be available here to visit this historic slate town, with its number of traditional shops and cafes to cater for visitors. After our break in Blaenau Ffestiniog, we will return along the Conwy Valley Line to Llandudno Junction, where we will reverse once again and retrace our way back to Bescot Yard. Here, we will have a locomotive changeover and say faewell to our Class 56 as a locomotive from the West Coast diesel pool takes over for the return run to Oxford via our outward route. The Ancient Kingdom Saturday 22nd August 2026 Taking full advantage of a long midsummer day we venture north to the Kingdom of Northumbria. We have three very different options for you to choose from - the wonderful Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the delightfully quaint Heatherslaw Light Railway or a visit to picturesque Alnwick. Our journey takes us through York, past Durham Castle and Cathedral and we glimpse Antony Gormley's extraordinary 'Angel of the North' as we approach Newcastle. After pausing at Alnmouth we reach Berwick-upon-Tweed, the border town still redolent of centuries of conflict between the English and the Scots. Those who choose to remain in Berwick will have around three and a half hours to explore, or choose from one of the three off train options below! OFF TRAIN OPTION - ALNWICK AT LEISURE The town of Alnwick dates back to AD600 and retains much of its original character. Alnwick Castle, the second largest inhabited castle after Windsor, is popular with film makers; Blackadder, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and Harry Potter were all made here. Alnwick Garden is a complex of formal gardens, featuring various themed plantings designed around a central water cascade. It is the most ambitious garden created in the UK post war. The old Alnwick station is now home to Barter Books, one of England's largest and most famous secondhand bookshops. This option includes a brief coach transfer between Alnmouth Station and Alnwick. Because there is such a choice of things to do we have not included any admission charges. You will have around four hours to explore. OFF TRAIN OPTION - THE HOLY ISLAND OF LINDISFARNE Perched tantalisingly just off the Northumberland coast and cut off by the tide twice a day, Holy Island and its Priory are considered one of the holiest sites in Britain. We leave the train at Alnmouth where coaches will be waiting for the journey to Lindisfarne which includes the narrow causeway that connects the island with the mainland. We can assure potential participants that we have checked the tide tables! We have some three hours here, time to take a walk to the castle or just explore this extraordinary place. Don't forget to purchase a bottle of the local produce, Lindisfarne Mead. OFF TRAIN OPTION - THE HEATHERSLAW LIGHT RAILWAY One of England's lesser known minor railways, this fifteen inch gauge line runs for two miles, following the River Till through an area rich in wildlife, set between the Cheviot Hills and the border with Scotland. Coaches meet the train at Berwick for the twelve mile run to the Heatherslaw Light Railway where we will enjoy a break of about three hours. Your supplement for this option includes coach transfers and a return journey on the railway. First Class Dining includes The Great British Breakfast and a four course dinner, served at your seat by The Railway Diners. First Class Dining is not available from, or back to Doncaster due to time constraints. The 'Stratford Blue' Bus Tour In partnership with Transport Museum Wythall we are adding an exclusive option to the Retro Cestrian Bard with a 1950s vintage bus tour of Stratford upon Avon. On arrival in Stratford we transfer directly from the train to board an original Stratford Blue Motor Services Leyland double decker bus to take a one-hour tour of Stratford. On route we pass a number of the town's highlights including Anne Hathaway's cottage, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Shakespeare's birthplace, the River Avon and more. This exclusive tour is restricted to just 50 seats and is only available to Retro Railtours ticket holders. Please note that this is not a guided tour with commentary, you will receive information on the sights that we pass on the route. This train features a number of firsts for locomotive fans, along with locomotives returning to former stamping grounds. 40013 'Andania' and 45118 'The Royal Artilleryman' will operate this tour. Step aboard our special train, running exclusively on Saturday 22nd August, for a memorable day excursion to the historic city of Chester and the seaside town of Llandudno. Soon after, we cross the magnificent Forth Bridge ? a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Scotland's most recognisable landmarks. This iconic Victorian engineering masterpiece is always a highlight, offering breathtaking views across the Firth of Forth and an unforgettable sense of history. Our next pick-up is at Edinburgh Waverley railway station, located in the heart of the capital, with excellent public transport connections for our guests. After a pick up at Lockerbie, we then arrive into the Border City of Carlisle to welcome our last guests on board our special train. We then head south along the West Coast Main Line, where high speed running is guaranteed to make the locomotive work hard. Toots Express Saturday 12th September 2026 This very special train, in support of Macmillan Cancer Support will be one not to miss, and we can't wait for you to join us as we take a pair of 50s to Edinburgh for an early Autumn break, where you will have time to explore this beautiful City, enjoy some true Scottish hospitality, or just wander along the Royal Mile to the Castle for some spectacular sights. Our very good friend Nick Collins, Network Rail Charter's Team Leader, who has been supporting the operation of Charters across the UK for a number of years, unfortunately lost his wife Suzanne recently to the horrible disease of cancer. In her memory we are truly honoured to be working with all of our partners to bring you this day out. We start our day in the slightly unusual location of Hitchin, where our 2 x Class 50's and full rake of comfortable MK3 coaching stock will depart just after 06.00. We head North, picking up at Letchworth Garden City, Royston, Cambridge, Ely, March and Peterborough, before making a diversion along the 'Joint Line' through Lincoln to Doncaster and onwards to York. Here, our final Pick up will be mid morning, plus will give us the opportunity for a short leg stretch and to get those all important photos. As we head further North, although our ultimate aim is Edinburgh, we are giving you the opportunity to alight earlier if you so wish and explore the amazing Cities of Durham or Newcastle. If not, we carry on and will be pleased to set you down in Edinburgh at 14:00 for your City exploration to begin. Returning to the station for our departure just after 16.30, our Class 50s will whisk you Southbound alongside the beautiful North East Coastline, where views of Bamburgh Castle - on its rocky hill, can be seen. The Cornish Branchliner Saturday 19 September 2026 Step aboard for an unforgettable diesel-hauled rail adventure that spans the very heart of Britain's railway heritage and some of its most spectacular scenery. Our journey begins at Crewe, one of the nation's most historic railway junctions, before heading south along the iconic West Coast Main Line, gathering passengers en-route as we pass through the Midlands and beyond. From the bustle of Birmingham New Street, we press south over classic main line territory, including the celebrated descent of the Lickey Incline, before continuing into the rolling landscapes of Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. ?As our train heads towards the South-West, anticipation builds for the dramatic coastal running that lies ahead. Our tour commences at the busy railway junction of Crewe, famous for its origins as a railway town and extensive works. We will travel southwards along the West Coast Main Line and call at Stafford before heading towards the West Midlands. A stop to pick up further passengers will be made at Tame Bridge Parkway, which offers convenient parking for Wolverhampton and Walsall passengers. Calling next at Birmingham New Street, we will now head southwards, including the descent of the Lickey Bank, through Bromsgrove and on to Worcestershire Parkway, where we pause to pick up passengers from the Worcester area. Further south, we call at Cheltenham and Cam & Dursley before heading towards Bristol. Pick up stops will be made at Bristol Parkway and Bristol Temple Mead, and then we head across the Somerset Levels through Bridgwater towards Exeter. We now have the eagerly awaited run along the famous Dawlish Sea Wall to look forward to as we sweep along the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean on this special section of track, often affected by bad weather and high waves. Heading inland at Teignmouth, we will follow the Teign estuary to Newton Abbot before we commence one of many very steep climbs over the south Devon Banks. Dainton Bank leads to Totnes, followed by the equally challenging climb over Rattery Bank on the edge of Dartmoor before we eventually reach the naval city of Plymouth. Famed for its naval dockyards, the city has a rich maritime history linked to the Mayflower carrying Pilgrims to America in 1620. Devonport is also a large naval base with early links to famous explorers like Sir Francis Drake and Captain Cook. After a pause at Plymouth, we will now leave Devon and enter Cornwall by way of our passage over Isambard Kingdom Brunel's impressive Royal Albert Bridge over the Tamar. Now in Cornwall, our route will follow the main line through Liskeard and Lostwithiel to the junction of the Fowey branch. Our special train will leave the main line and closely follow the river Fowey through to Carne Point. This is now a freight only line and it's quite rare for a passenger train to run down the branch. We pass the little harbour at Golant and reach the present end of the line at Carne Point, which is a working port that has served the China Clay industry since the line opened in 1869. The attractive Fowey harbour is a mile further along, but the town no longer has a station, although there was a recent proposal to reopen the branch once again to passenger traffic. Once we have reached the docks, we will retrace our outward route back to Plymouth and then call to set down passengers at our earlier pick-up points back to Crewe. Another Cockney Comes Home Friday 2nd October 2026 In advance of our exciting 'Southern Seaside Sparrow' railtour the following day, why not join us for a great value positioning move from Great Yarmouth to Liverpool Street and Ely via some classic routes for Class 37s. Our traction will be two Class 37s working top and tail and we are expecting that one of our locos, provided by EPR, will be a former Stratford allocated machine and running over routes once so familiar. For those so inclined, you can start your day at Great Yarmouth for a run to Norwich via Reedham. Others may choose to join us at Norwich for a more sociable start time and the run behind what we hope will be our Class 37/0 locomotive. As you might expect our route to London Liverpool Street is not straightforward as we initially travel west to Ely before joining the Soham Branch via Bury St Edmunds. Having journeyed into Suffolk we rejoin the Anglian main line north of Stowmarket, heading towards Ipswich and thereafter pass through Colchester, Chelmsford and Shenfield before entering the urban sprawl of East London and terminating at London Liverpool Street. After a short break we leave London Liverpool Street with our second Class 37 leading via Bethnal Green and Tottenham Hale, with a set down at Broxbourne and Cambridge North and a mid-afternoon arrival at Ely. Whilst we acknowledge the pathing constraints charters face on the mainline, we have not requested any loops or track bobbins on this trip in the hope that Network Rail can provide us with some high-speed running during the day! The Southern Seaside Sparrow Saturday 3rd October 2026 We are heading to beautiful Bognor Regis! So please join us onboard a proper loco-hauled train with loud Class 37 locomotives providing the power as we explore Southern routes which seldom see a fantastic train such as ours. We offer very sociable start and finish times, a rare branch and routing for Class 37s and a generous early afternoon break in a fabulous location. In addition, we have planned the route and timings so that all the rare loco hauled track will be covered during daylight hours, so you won't miss a thing. We will certainly have a lot of fun as some graded routes will ensure the noise of our locomotives will reverberate around the gentrified suburbs of the Capital and the Home Counties where other passengers awaiting their mundane electric trains will look on agog as we thunder through, and swarms of enthusiasts attempt to capture the moment for their social media content whilst secretly wishing they were sat in your seat! Our day starts in Ely with our Class 37/4 leading towards our further pick ups at Cambridge North, Letchworth Garden City and Stevenage. Soon we divert from the East Coast Main Line at Langley Junction for a rare run via Hertford North to collect more passengers before heading south to our north London pick up point of Finsbury Park. We navigate our way via Gospel Oak, Willesden High Level and Kensington Olympia, before reaching the complicated maze of lines in South London. Many fabulous sights of the Capital will be visible through your window as we head towards the city centre and our final pick up point of London Bridge in the shadow of the Shard. Our departure route will be very rare indeed for Class 37 haulage as we pass New Cross, climb up to Lewisham then curve round to take the Mid Kent Line heading towards Elmers End and into the terminus at Hayes. Here we have a short break, hopefully just enough time to grab a photo, before retracing our steps. We continue back as far as New Beckenham where, very unusually, we reverse round the curve to Beckenham Junction, to allow us to take the former London Chatham & Dover route via Penge East to Herne Hill. Here we once again reverse before taking the former LBSCR line to Tulse Hill, Crystal Palace, Croydon, Sutton and then onwards towards the stunning Mid Sussex Line. With its gradients providing the audible pleasure, we race along through Dorking, Horsham, Amberley and into the beautiful River Arun Valley before finally arriving at Bognor Regis where our locos take a well-earned rest! Bognor Regis - Today's tour affords us an off train break of a couple of hours at the charming seaside resort of Bognor Regis. Blessed with one of the sunniest climates in Britain which we hope will hold until the autumn(!), and with the promenade and award-winning beach just ten minutes stroll from the station, Bognor is a great destination. You will find ample opportunities for refreshment just a short walk from the station, and we will be sure to let the local pubs and fish and chip shops know we are coming! Fully rested and refreshed our trusty Class 37s will now take us along the delightful Southern Coast through Worthing and Shoreham. The route offers a seamless mix of traditional seaside resorts, coastal marshland, and views across to the South Downs. At Hove we turn left via the Cliftonville Curve round to Preston Park to join the busy Brighton main Line. From here its 'hammer time' as we take the fast, former Brighton Belle route, hopefully non-stop back to London Victoria. After saying a fond farewell to any passengers who wish to leave us in Central London, we weave our way back towards Finsbury Park via Kensington Olympia, Willesden and North London, then onwards via the Hertford Loop with more passenger set downs at Hertford North and Stevenage and across the Hitchin Flyover towards Letchworth, Cambridge North and Ely to end what has sure to have been a fantastic day for all travelling around the beautiful South of England behind vintage motive power.
