Autumn Steam Gala 11-13 September 2026 Join us for a multi engine event, with tours of some of our normally closed areas We are pleased to announce that the visiting engine for our annual steam gala this year will be 229, The 'Coffee Pot' on loan from The Flour Mill. 229 is a Great Eastern Railway 0-4-0 tank engine built by Neilsons in Glasgow in 1876 and sold by the GER for use in the National Shipyard in Chepstow during the First World War, where it remained until sold by Fairfield Mabey in 1982. After cosmetic restoration it was on display at the North Woolwich Old Station Museum in East London from 1984 until 2008. Upon the shameful closure of the museum by Newham Council the locomotive was returned to the Flour Mill, where it is planned to start a full overhaul to working order in 2013. This fabulous little engine is among the oldest steam locomotives in working order - and one of the smallest, weighing just 21 tons. The name 'Coffee Pot', or 'Flat-Top', is thanks to its unusual flat-shaped water tank and it is Great Eastern Railway '209' class 0-4-0ST no. 229. A truly delightful locomotive, it has been meticulously returned to working order for the first time in nearly 70 years by owner Bill Parker and his team at the Flour Mill workshops in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. Join us for an exciting weekend and celebrate steam with this multi-engine event. See autotrain operations, freight trains, shunting demonstrations, plus tours of our workshop areas, usually closed to the public. See some of the features of our site in operation, including our signal box, traverser, turntable and coal stage. This is a great way to travel back in time to the golden age of the Great Western Railway and savour the sights, sounds and smells of steam as you explore this 24-acre living museum with trains dating from Victorian times to the 1960s. Steam trains will be operating on both demonstration lines, allowing you to take unlimited rides. Check our Locomotive Roster to see what we expect to be running on the date of your visit.

Our four day festival of steam will feature both guest and home-fleet locomotives operating a busy timetable between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth. If you love steam, this is the place to be! Ride behind every locomotive, visit The Engine House at Highley to break your day, or sample the finest real-ales in our pubs, as you experience the Severn Valley at its steamiest! We have our fingers crossed for the anticipated gala debut of newly restored Prairie tank GWR No 4150. Joining the line-up will be Ivatt Class 2 tank locomotive No 41313, appearing courtesy of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. The visit marks several notable milestones, including the locomotive's first-ever appearance at the Severn Valley Railway and the first visit by an Isle of Wight-based locomotive to the line. It will also become only the third member of the Ivatt Class 2 2-6-2 tank family to visit the SVR in preservation. We're pleased that BR(W) Pannier Tank 9681 will also be joining us for the Autumn Steam Gala (17-20 September). With the chance to pair up with our own BR Pannier Tank 7714, we are sure that 9681 is going to be a real draw for our passengers. We are grateful to the Dean Forest Locomotive Group for the hire of their locomotive, and to Dean Forest Railway for making the locomotive available.

Autumn Steam Weekend Friday 25th September - Sunday 27th September 2026 Join us as the much-loved Autumn Steam Weekend returns to mark a special milestone ? 50 years of the WSR in preservation. We're delighted to welcome an exciting lineup of visiting and home fleet locomotives, making this a must-see event for steam enthusiasts and families alike. Across all three days, an intensive timetable will keep the action moving, giving you plenty of opportunities to explore our beautifully preserved stations, ride behind iconic engines, and take in the stunning autumn scenery along England's longest heritage railway. From the rolling Quantock Hills to the Somerset coast, trains will be running from early morning into the evening. The whole railway comes alive for the weekend, with museums, heritage displays, and model railways open throughout ? perfect for visitors of all ages. And with steam engines against a backdrop of autumn colour, don't forget your camera! Ticket information: Advance ticket sales close at 10am the day before travel to allow time for preparations. After this point, tickets will need to be purchased on the day at one of our booking offices.
Industrial Steam of South Wales II Gala Friday 25th / Saturday 26th / Sunday 27th September 2026 Our Steam Gala returns for 2026. The only steam gala in South Wales this year. This year sees our second Industrial Steam of South Wales Gala, the last having taken place 15 years ago in 2011. Join us for three incredible days of steam power in the Eastern Valley of Wales, at the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Expect to hear the engines working hard as they power up our steep gradients. An intensive timetable will be in operation with both passenger and demonstration freight trains operating. ?This year's line up will feature locomotives that originally worked in South Wales. Visiting Locomotive Announcement. We are delighted to announce the first visiting locomotive for the gala - GWR Pannier Tank No 7754. Built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow for the GWR in 1930, 7754 was allocated to Reading, Old Oak Common and finally Wellington (Shropshire). Following withdrawal from service in January 1959, the locomotive was sold to the National Coal Board, where it first worked at Talywain Colliery, approximately just 3 miles down the valley from our railway A few months later 7754 was transferred to Mountain Ash, travelling their over BR metals in a freight train. We're delighted to welcome an exciting lineup of visiting and home fleet locomotives, making this a must-see event for steam enthusiasts and families alike. Across all three days, an intensive timetable will keep the action moving, giving you plenty of opportunities to explore our beautifully preserved stations, ride behind iconic engines, and take in the stunning autumn scenery along England's longest heritage railway. From the rolling Quantock Hills to the Somerset coast, trains will be running from early morning into the evening. The whole railway comes alive for the weekend, with museums, heritage displays, and model railways open throughout ? perfect for visitors of all ages. The Autumn Steam Gala event is a chance to enjoy unlimited rides behind visiting locomotives as well as our home-fleet locomotives, running on an enhanced timetable. Explore all of our heritage stations along the 10-mile line, get up close to some of our locomotives, experience Brake Van rides, find out more about our restoration projects and enjoy talks and various exhibits. Opening times: 9am - 6pm More details to follow. First visiting locomotive to be announced: Ivatt Class 2, 41313 is the first locomotive visiting the Autumn Steam Gala, courtesy of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. 41313 is an example of the Class 2 2-6-2 tank locomotive designed for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway by George Ivatt. Construction of the class began in 1946 with No. 1200. Ten locomotives were completed before nationalisation of the railways in 1948, the remaining 120 being built by British Railways. 41313 is the sister locomotive to our very own 41312, of which the Autumn gala will be it's last gala prior to being withdrawn for overhaul. 1788 Kilmersdon Driver Experience Driver experiences with 1788 Kilmersdon will take place at Ropley yard, from 10.30am - 3pm, each day. Under the guidance of a driver and fireman, participants will take the controls of Kilmersdon. This experience will last approximately 5-7 minutes. One participant per 10 minute time slot. Please note, we ask you to turn up at Ropley yard 10 minutes in advance of your time slot. This experience is for people aged 18+ years. Please note, you need to buy a gala ticket to be able to buy a Kilmersdon driver experience. £20 per person (This can be booked when you book your gala ticket.) Behind the Scenes Tour Our Behind the Scenes Tour is a unique opportunity to get an insight into the craftsmanship and equipment needed to restore and maintain The Watercress Line's steam locomotives and rolling stock. If you are interested in steam engines, you will benefit from seeing where we carry out specialist machining, locomotive assembly, boiler overhaul and carriage restoration. Health & Safety ? Our workshops are a heavy engineering environment with uneven surfaces, steps and obstructions to be manoeuvred around. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate wheelchair visitors. ? Visitors must be able to climb steps, walk on rough surfaces and step over objects unaided. ? Robust footwear and clothing must be worn; flip-flops, sandals and open-toed shoes are not permitted. ? Pets, including assistance dogs, are not permitted in the workshops. ? Children must be accompanied by an adult. The route is not suitable for children under the age of 12. Celebrating the power, presence, and prestige of Britain's largest and most impressive steam locomotives. Following the success of previous Giants of Steam events ? which have seen some of the country's most famous heavy express engines working intensive services across the line ? the 2026 gala promises another unforgettable weekend of big engines, big sounds, and big spectacle. BR 9F No. 92134 will be visiting us for Giants Of Steam 2026* Built at Crewe Works in 1957, 92134 is a symbol of the final era of British steam. As part of the BR Standard Class 9F fleet, it was designed for immense power, tasked with hauling heavy mineral and freight trains across the network. While built for strength, these 'Gentle Giants' were famously versatile?even occasionally outrunning dedicated express engines on passenger turns. 92134 is particularly special as a survivor of the single-chimney design. After a long road from the famous Barry Scrapyard through a dedicated restoration, it stands today as a living testament to 1950s engineering excellence. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Self Family and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR). Their generosity and hard work in maintaining this icon have made it possible for 92134 to join our 2026 Giants Weekend line-up. Joining 92134 for Giants Of Steam 2026 is 71000 Duke of Gloucester* Built at British Railways' Crewe Works in 1954, Duke of Gloucester is the sole member of the BR Standard Class 8 Pacifics and one of the most fascinating steam locomotives ever constructed. Designed under R. A. Riddles, it featured advanced engineering including three cylinders and Caprotti valve gear, representing the ultimate development of British steam locomotive design. Although its potential was not fully realised during BR service, the locomotive was saved from scrapping and underwent an extensive preservation-era rebuild that corrected its original design flaws. Since returning to steam in 1986, Duke of Gloucester has proven itself to be a powerful, efficient, and highly capable express locomotive ? a true giant in every sense. Its appearance at the Bluebell Railway offers a rare opportunity to see this unique locomotive operating in a heritage setting, adding considerable prestige to the 2026 event.
